Can someone tell me what the difference is between a contested and uncontested marriage?
exactly….an uncontested divorce is cheaper and faster because the two of you already agree to everything; contested is more expensive and can be dragged out for a long long time because the two of you can’t agree to the terms

To me it’s the parties agreeing on the property settlement and children status

No brainier Uncontested is when both can agree. Contested is when you can not agree.

Contested divorce takes place in states where you have to prove one person is at fault to get a divorce.
Usually there is a reason one party is trying to prevent the other from divorcing them. Spousal support, Medical Insurance, etc. or maybe even just spite to prevent the spouse from having a new life with someone else.
Uncontested divorce is usually found in no fault states. One or both have decided they can’t stand the others face and wants out. They file the paper work and a few weeks later they are both free.
Don’t confuse that with fighting over the marital bed. Needing an arbitrator or judge to decide who gets which bills and assets can happen with both types of divorce.

Uncontested- you both agree on EVERYTHING- property settlement, children, child support, alimony, EVERYTHING. It is hassle free because you avoid a long court battle.
Contested- you can’t agree on something (or anything) and it has to go in front of the judge and takes a lot longer and a lot more money.
