If you’re not a lawyer, but need to learn that stuff, because you’re separated from your spouse and headed towards divorce, what is the best website to get the best and clearest information for different states? Especially if you might move to a different state soon, and might get divorced a year or two later, and want to make sure you understand the rules before moving to a state where they could be a big problem.

I use Google a lot, because I find not just the legal statutes, but case law for that state that might imply changes to the written statutes.

In the USA, the divorce laws are in direct violation of God’s laws, as described in the old and new testament. Yes, USA Christians don’t say anything.

So why should we insist our marriage laws follow God’s laws…?

1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"

3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied.

4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."

5 "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. 6 "But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ [a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, [b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ [c] So they are no longer two, but one. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

If a Canadian couple who reside and work in the US decide to divorce, are they subject to Canadian or American divorce laws? They have no green card, only a work visa, and there are children involved. The preference is to both remain in the US, but one spouse is considering returning to Canada with their children.
Can the spouse return with the kids?

The laws that prevail are those of the jurisdiction in which the divorce action is filed. You’re not required to get a divorce in Canada just because you were married there. Nor are other nations bound to conduct your divorce according to Canadian law.

I’m talking about the laws which existed before the "no-fault" divorce laws came in.

I wasn’t around at the time, but whenever I read or hear about them, they seem pretty sensible.

What was so wrong with them that they needed changing?

They made it hard for a battered spouse to get a divorce. The court proceedings were long and drawn out because someone had to prove fault. Now a battered spouse can just get a divorce. The whole "no-fault" divorce was started by feminist divorce lawyers who wanted to weaken marriage and at the same time make their jobs less stressful. The "no-fault" divorce is ok if the marriage is one of violence, but it has turned marriage into nothing more than a extended courtship. It is so easy to end a marriage now, that people don’t think about the commitment it will take to make it work. They just jump in knowing if they don’t like it they can leave.
